I made the drive up to Beech Hill Barn on a warm July afternoon, passed horses grazing on the way in, and pretty much immediately thought, ohhhh this light is going to be GOOD.
Becca and Kyle are getting married here next summer, so their engagement session doubled as a venue walkthrough / wedding-day scouting adventure! We wandered around the property, talked through some of their plans, found spots we already know we want to use next year, and obviously stopped every time I saw good light because it is truly AMAZING.
I loved getting this evening with them before the wedding. There was no timeline, no guests arriving, and nobody wondering where they were supposed to be next. It was just the three of us exploring Beech Hill Barn, taking photos, and getting excited about everything still to come.

Why I Love Beech Hill Barn in Pittston, Maine

Beech Hill Barn sits up above the surrounding countryside, so when the sun starts getting lower, you get this gorgeous light stretching all the way across the fields. It changes as you move around the property too—soft through the trees in one spot, long and golden across the grass in another. As a photographer, I was basically a kid in a candy store.
There’s also so much room to play here creatively. I can photograph you tiny against the rolling hills in one frame, get right in the middle of you two laughing in a sun beam in the next, pull out film, play with movement and blur, and then follow you into completely different light five minutes later.
That kind of variety is a huge reason I’m already so excited to photograph Becca and Kyle’s wedding here next year!
If you care about photography as art and want your gallery to have a mix of the big, beautiful scenes AND the happy, blurry, emotional little pieces of the day, Beech Hill Barn gives us so much to work with. Becca & Kyle’s Engagement Photos
Becca and I had planned everything over the phone, so seeing her and Kyle in person for the first time felt like meeting up with old friends. We skipped the awkward handshake phase entirely and went straight to hugging in the parking lot.
Before I ever pulled out my camera, they showed me around Beech Hill Barn, and we started picturing pieces of their wedding day. We talked about where family photos might happen, places they were excited to use, and where dancing or speeches could fit into the evening. It felt like we were all getting to know the property together while envisioning what would happen next summer.
From there, we eased into their session. I gave them a few prompts to get started, and they went for it without a second of hesitation. Becca’s smile kept drifting toward Kyle, and every time it did, he was already looking back at her. They’re both so kind and sentimental, and there’s something magnetic about the way they are with each other. Watching them relax into the evening made it so easy to step back and let their story unfold in front of me.
We kept photographing until the sun finally disappeared behind the hills. Before we said goodbye, we traded one more round of hugs and excitement to meet back here for the wedding. I drove home smiling the whole way, already so excited about everything that’s ahead for these two.
Why We Chose Beech Hill Barn for Their Engagement Photos
If your venue allows it, I love, love, love the idea of using it for engagement photos. There’s something really nice about getting to spend an ordinary evening somewhere that will eventually hold such a big memory. You can walk around without guests arriving, vendors setting up, or a timeline pulling you toward the next thing. You get to take the place in while it’s still quiet and let it start feeling familiar.
I especially love that for couples who feel a little nervous about being photographed. By the time your wedding comes around, you’ve already been here with me once. You know what it feels like to have my camera around, I know how the two of you settle into photos together, and the venue itself doesn’t feel completely new anymore.
Of course, every venue has its own rules, so always ask about off-day access first. If yours isn’t available, I’d choose somewhere else with a little history behind it. That’s exactly why I loved photographing this Lincolnville Beach engagement session , somewhere that already meant something to the couple.
Film, Movement, Blur + Making Your Photos Feel Like You
When Becca told me she loves black-and-white photos, film, grain, movement, and blur, I was like… oh YES. We are going to have fun.
I love a technically beautiful photograph. Give me gorgeous light and thoughtful composition all day long. But I also love the slightly weird ones. The blurry ones. The frame where you’re laughing so hard nobody is looking at the camera. The film photo with a little grain that somehow feels like it could’ve been sitting in a family album for 30 years.
I want both.
And I want to know what you’re drawn to before I photograph you. Maybe you love flash. Maybe you want tons of black-and-white, or you send me a Pinterest board, and I immediately understand your brain. Tell me!!!
Becca loving the same creative things I already love gave me so much room to play during their session. I even brought one of my film cameras from 1995—the same year I was born—which obviously makes me emotionally attached to an inanimate object.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos at Beech Hill Barn
My favorite advice for engagement outfits is pretty simple: wear something that feels like you on a really good day. Years from now, I want you to look at these photos and immediately recognize the two of you, not wonder who convinced you to buy an outfit you’d never wear again.
At Beech Hill Barn, plan for an evening spent outside. We’ll probably wander through the grass, move around the property, and follow the light wherever it decides to be prettiest, so wear shoes you can comfortably walk in or bring a second pair for getting between spots.
I also loooove clothing that moves. A flowy skirt, loose linen shirt, or anything that catches a little breeze can add so much life to your photos without us having to force it.
And please don’t sit at home spiraling over four dresses and 17 open browser tabs. Send me photos!! I genuinely love helping with this part. We can look at your outfits, the location, the weather, the light, and the overall vibe you’re going for together.

When Is the Best Time for Engagement Photos in Maine?
Becca and Kyle chose late July for their engagement photos at Beech Hill Barn, which gave us a warm evening, green fields, and enough daylight to take our time all the way through sunset. Summer here has that long, lingering light I love, especially when it starts stretching across the hill at the end of the night.
The property would feel completely different in another season, though. Spring would bring softer greens as everything starts waking back up, while fall would trade those summer fields for changing leaves and an earlier sunset.
I don’t think there’s one “best” season for engagement photos here. I’d rather know what you want the evening to feel like and plan around that. I also choose our start time based on the light instead of picking an arbitrary time months in advance. As we get closer, I’ll watch sunset time and the weather so we can give ourselves plenty of room to enjoy the evening instead of racing the sun.

They host one wedding each weekend, with space for up to 150 guests and optional on-site lodging for up to 32 people. Your weekend can include your rehearsal dinner, wedding day, and farewell brunch, which means you get more time with everyone instead of squeezing the whole celebration into a few hours.
The property also makes it easy for the day to move without everyone constantly packing up and heading somewhere new. You can have your ceremony tucked into the Oak Grove, move into the Carriage Barn or out onto the Bluestone Patio, and end the night inside the Barn. I LOVE that from a photography perspective because the less time we spend getting from point A to point B, the more time I get to pay attention to everything happening around you. More hugs, more conversations, more people wandering off together for a minute, more of the stuff you didn’t plan but will probably end up loving in your gallery.
That feels especially sweet if you have guests traveling in from different parts of New England. You brought all of these people to Maine because you want to be with them, and Beech Hill Barn gives you room to do exactly that. One thing I’d pay attention to before heading there is the venue’s driving directions. They recommend approaching through Gardiner and Randolph rather than trusting every GPS route once you get closer, so I’d save their directions ahead of time instead of figuring it out while you’re halfway down a Maine back road!

For weddings with more than 30 guests, Beech Hill Barn currently requires a professional day-of coordinator. The venue handles setup of its own furniture, while your coordinator keeps the rest of the wedding-day logistics moving. I am a huge fan of having someone in that role so you can enjoy your day without worrying about what needs to happen next.
